Washington D.C.’s Festive Downtown Holiday Market Is Back: Visitors Shop Artisan Made Gifts

by Megan Rummler

Washington—On a recent Sunday in front of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery at 8th and F Street, the Downtown Holiday Market is in full swing. Now in its 13th year, the outdoor holiday market was packed with local area residents and tourists shopping for the Christmas season.

The market runs from November 24th through December 23rd, 2017 and is open daily from noon to 8:00 p.m.

At first glance and upon arrival, the market runs a compact span. However, according to the website, the Downtown Holiday Market has approximately 60 tents with over 160 different exhibitors that feature rich and diverse products and goods.

Note that exhibitors often rotate, thus are not guaranteed to be at the market the next day.

For shoppers that want a brief respite, they can view the daily live entertainment on Market Stage, located between the two major sections of exhibitor tents.

There is ample seating along with several heat lamps located directly in front of the stage.

Check the website for accurate performance schedules.

Festive sweet and savory treats abound at the market for customers that might need some nourishment.

From hot cocoa and cider to freshly made churros, donuts and empanadas, market-goers have multiple choices to refuel.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the Downtown Holiday Market is the artisan goods and products, a majority of which are hand designed and handcrafted. Featured here is solid, Belgian chocolate molds from Germany, made to resemble a variety of tools.

Gifts range from striking art prints to Turkish towels, vegan soaps, infant clothing, eclectic art and tchotchkes.

Market organizers say the venue aims to showcase small and locally owned businesses.

Visitors to the Downtown Holiday Market will have no trouble coming across unique and one-of-a-kind gifts.
